Week 3 Collaboration

Following is a mathematics standard for 7th grade included in TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics), which is a curriculum standard for mathematics in Texas, U.S. There is a similar standard for middle grade students in Korea. As an in-service or pre-service mathematics teacher, how would you design a lesson and what kind of instructional strategy you would employ to teach this standard? If you teach science, how could you incorporate supporting this TEK in your science content?

(3)  Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to add, subtract, multiply, and divide while solving problems and justifying solutions. The student is expected to:
(A)  add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers fluently; and
(B)  apply and extend previous understandings of operations to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers.
